hi all...

would love to experience SMP and so am considering the FOSC event there on August 10/11.

i've only ever attended 'speed off the street' day and supersprints. from this point-of-view, what should i expect at an FOSC event?

i notice that the next FOSC includes a 'come and try' event. anybody recommend whether i should consider this or is it really for first-timers?

what will be the difference between saturday and sunday for those who can only make it to one day?

car is a road going nc.

thanks :)

Hi there

FoSC events are interesting for the variety of vehicles and competitors! On the day they run race events and regularity. To compete in the races you need to comply with mandatory AASA circuit racing requirements including roll over protection, race seat and harness, kill switch etc.

To compete in regularity I believe the requirements are similar to a supersprint (can someone confirm?). For the 'come and try' day street cars are acceptable if they are rego'd. PLUS you get the benefit of instruction/guidance from the 'masters'.

My understanding is Saturday and Sunday will both have the same event schedule (with the exception of 'come and try it' being Saturday only).

The 'come and try' sounds like a good deal. But I would suggest if you have already done supersprints give the regularity a go. Mike Hicks would be the best person to contact about regularity questions , the mx5 club motorsport secretary (he has also done FoSC regularity events).

pm me if you have any questions. (and btw I have no affiliation with FoSC).
Craig.

I should add that if you are interested in circuit racing and have the necessary safety requirements, FoSC is a great place to start with the 'you touch panels and you go home' approach usually enforced. Downside is there are not as many mx5s taking part as an MRA event.

I'll be sending in my entry today, along with a mate and his RS Clio, for the Come & Try. I was keen to do the Regularity but to do so would require renewing my CAMS licence ($100) and a higher entry fee ($180), vs $100 for the C&T. I'm hoping it'll be a good way to get some more coaching and a feel for some events outside of the MX5 club days, with a view to entering some regularities at future FoSC and MRA events, and perhaps Supersprints when the budget allows.

Yeah makes sense. It is cheap. Did you get any more info on how much track you get?

Masters session, 2 solo sessions and a regularity (separate to the other regularity competitors). Pretty reasonable for $100.

what do you mean by 'solo sessions'?

furthermore, do you know roughly how many sessions a competitor would receive if they entered only the regularity event? (not the 'come and try')

thanks

The Masters session will involve coaching in your car with one of the "Masters", then 2 solo sessions where you're on track on your own (presumably with other cars though), effectively a practice session.

I asked about track time for the 'standard' regularity and Charles said it was equivalent to those entering the races, so the pricing structure is the same ($180/360 for 1 or 2 days). I don't know for sure but I'd assume that means a few practice sessions and a couple of regularities but that's probably a question better answered by the racing guys.

I think typically 1 qualifying session and 3 sprint races in a day.

Entered for the Come & Try.

I had thought that a licence (CAMS/AASA) wasn't required for the C&T only but I was wrong. Ordinarily that would be fine but my CAMS licence expires literally 10 days before the event!

I'm thinking I'll just get an AASA licence and hope that future MX5 club events at SMP switch over to AASA regs.

The MX5 Club doesn't control the licence required for SMP, ARDC does, so don't waste your money and risk that a AASA licence maybe used in the future, just get a CAMS licence then you're covered for all events - Supersprints, Club days and FOSC.

I think this “come and try” would be good for a first timer but if you have done Club days or Supersprints you may as well enter the regularity event as the other will be a little tame for you.

Can I just say that if you do go in regularity, be very aware that some drivers use the “send home if you touch panels” rule as meaning “I don’t need to use my mirrors” rule. They have no idea what mirrors are for or that faster cars can overtake them. Take care as there is a lot of puffed up egos in turboed or V8 cars that can’t get through their heads that MX-5’s are pretty quick around this circuit.

The number of runs I got in last years event was four plus a free for all at the end of the day.

I would just get the CAMS licence (as I did last year) but I know I won't get to the track again for the rest of this year so whatever I get, half of the annual fee is going to be wasted.

I was curious about the regs/licence required at SMP and couldn't find any info on it when searching yesterday. How is it that FoSC is running under AASA at Amaroo but the MX5 club can't?

The entry list is out, it has 5 mx5s in the sports race category, Bill, John, myself, and Spence and Yemin. Is that right Spence or have FOSC got it wrong?

There is also a Motor Race championship at Wakefield that weekend so that has sucked away a couple of entries that were otherwise coming.
