Re: 2017 CAMS NSW Superprints Championship
Only did 2 runs before the heat and arthritis got the better of me.
Did better in the class points than I thought though. Good strategic move that one.
Had a hard time with a new 6.2 liter HSV Commodore that chose to ignore the blue flags being franticly waved at him and intentionally blocked every corner lap after lap.
Fast in a straight line with a few hundred more horsepower, but couldn't brake and get around a corner to save his life.
The bloke in a WRX that put in a dangerous overtaking move on me under a yellow flag was a worry too. He could only do it after getting the checkered flag for the end of session.
The 5 liter Commodore that was clearly un-road worthy, blowing thick blue smoke and dropping oil every time he hit the gas was a special. With his weaving all over the track to try to block other cars and dropping oil had all of us trying to pass him treading carefully and waiting for a safe stop to pass.
The organisers kept banging on about windows being open in hardtops, but ignored clear breaches of motorsport rules.
An Amazing day at the track! Can't wait to run with MX5s again.

I did hear that entrants didn't get many laps.
Round 1 was abysmal from my perspective. I was slotted into group 4 with a huge variety of other cars. This is what the grid looked like: MNR Vortex (clubman), EVO, 200SX, HSV Commodore, Skyline GTR, VL Commodore V8, Torana, 86, M3, Megane RS, 200SX ... then me in a stock NC ... Golf R, a bunch of 240Zs and other things further back. It was a dog's breakfast of a group and many drivers were very rusty after an extended break. My first run was red flagged twice and my only flying lap was interrupted by traffic and then a crash in front of me at turn 14. The second run wasn't until 12:45pm and was much better after I found some space on track and I got four clear laps. The third run was only three laps for unknown reason and all but the last lap was interrupted by traffic. I had an engine warning light while waiting on the grid for the fourth run so I bailed early - it was too hot for any improvement anyway. They called off the day at 4pm even though the track was booked until 5pm. So I had five clear laps at a cost of $255 - appalling value for money. However this is highly unusual, and the rest of the MX-5 crew had much better luck as they were nearly all placed in the same run group. At least 15-16 clear laps is much more typical of SMP-GP supersprints.
Is it good value compared to club track days?
Depends which club is running the round. This one was ARDC and was very poor value, IMHO. The next is MX-5 Club of NSW and will definitely be excellent value based on previous form. But CAMS NSW Supersprints are a state championship in open competition and you get to drive all four configurations at Sydney Motorsport Park, in addition to Wakefield Park.
i am wondering about supersprints or whether to skip that step and go straight to MX-5 cup if i can get below 1:16 at Wakefield.
At the very least, you should not consider MX-5 Cup before getting experience on tracks other than Wakefield Park and SMP-South which will be the only tracks the Club uses for track days in 2017. There are alternatives to CAMS NSW Supersprints, including the Interclub Supersprint series (NSWRRC is hosting round 2 at SMP-GP on 19 March and they're low on entrants), ARDC track days, etc where you can drive some alternate tracks. And if you're going to try a CAMS Supersprint, I recommend you skip round 1 and tag along later in the year once the gremlins are ironed out.

I wonder if there are some ARDC drivers deliberately making life difficult for the MX5 Club drivers in order to try and secure the championship. Hmmm.

Re: 2017 CAMS NSW Superprints Championship
I'll second Guran's comment about skipping the first round or two of the Supersprints.
The last 2 seasons I've have all types of other cars putting on some really dumb moves in the first round or two.
I'll never forget the 5 liter HSV Commodore pulling up next to me on the inside of turn 1, 1/4 of the way into the corner.
The Commodore had it's line for that corner all wrong and overtaking would have never worked out without an incident.
At around 165kmh it was lucky for both of us it backed off from such a stupid move. Not a lot of room for error in turn 1 with two cars side by side.
The Supersprints are not a race series. When drivers don't know each others, or their own strengths and weaknesses, the "racers" can get really dangerous for everybody.
Like Guran said, later in the season many cars stop showing up. The running groups settle in a fair bit and everybody has fun with a higher degree of safety.
In my view, MX5 Club members can be proud of how the club puts on it's Supersprint round and all the club track days.
It's good motorsport, good value for money, good companionship, always well organized and as safe as any motorsport speed event can be.
Other NSW motorsport clubs could learn a lot from the MX5 club's example.

Interesting that you say "other nsw motorsport clubs"
I have been a member of more than 10 car clubs over the years and this is the first one that is into more than 'just' motorsport.

No pressure David. Just an expression of how much fun I've had compared with last Sunday and the adventure land of group 6.
Good for Nuddy, an old hand. Welcome aboard and I'm sure you'll have fun in the motorsport context too .
I can't make the breakfast club alpine run this year, so there's a spot there if you want to go on a great run through the NSW and VIC alps.

Re: 2017 CAMS NSW Superprints Championship
Rd1 was probably best filed in box labelled 'well we had to have a Rd1, now that we have had it lets get ready for Rd2'!
It started out with the Club's three garages locked and ARDC unable to unlock them. Cue confusion on ARDC's part, and the need to find another set of garages for us. By the time that was sorted we had lost a bundle of time, probably close to an hour. It also played havoc with getting replacements for two withdrawals who had paid for a full garage
. Smart move, those in carports
Then we had the farce (again) about open cars and windows/window nets. This is getting worse, it was just a NSWRRC thing, now the disease has spread to ARDC (hint - shared CofC). I understand the Panel will be writing (again
) to clubs on the issue. I can confidently predict that neither the garages nor windows will be issues at Rd2
.
Driving standards are usually pretty good (in my experience), but there can be exceptions and it is disappointing to hear the reports above. Having had problems in the past with cars too fast on the straight, but too slow in the twisties, I have first tried negotiation with the other driver, almost always works. But if it doesn't, I get my grid position changed - though by then another session has been 'wasted'. Smoking and dropping oil should also be reported - if it wasn't blackflagged during the session, it will probably be out there again next time.
I was disappointed that the day was ended with only the minimum number of runs. Given the stoppages, and the availability of another hour, we could have had another run.
So, altogether a pretty ordinary event.

Not sure the drivers, but the organisers certainly tried to make my day that bit more difficult.
It started at scrutineering, where there were discussions about my STOCK wheel studs not being long enough, my AS1698 helmet not having a FIA sticker behind its lining, and my brand new ALDI fire extinguisher's expiry date being too difficult to read. I was then 'randomly' picked for a breath and drug test, together with a few other MX5 Club members also 'randomly' selected.
Later, I had my lap times in the first session discarded, as my car was again 'randomly' checked by the class eligibility officer and I was told that I'm no longer allowed to run Nitto NT01 tyres in type 2, even though other drivers running much faster tyres such as Yokohama AO50 are perfectly legal. While chasing the issue, I found that my race number had also been allocated to someone else, so my times were being recorded under the name of a Commodore driver in class 5A.
Even though all these issues were sorted throughout the day and my lap times were restored to grant me 2nd place in 2B (thanks Stewart for all your help), I must say that I was feeling extremely frustrated at the end of the event.

Nuddy, unless I've missed one of your posts, I understand that you are planning on running a stock NB8A at Wakefield Park. If that's the case, a time under 1:16 is very unlikely, as this would pretty much mean matching the club record (1:15.50) for a stock NB8A at that particular track.
I don't want to dis-encourage you, but to give you a bit of perspective, such record lap times are set by very experienced drivers running in ideal conditions (i.e. fresh temperatures, high air pressure, plenty of rubber on the tarmac from another event run the day before, no traffic, a reasonably fresh set of tyres, etc), and even the driver who set the record will take several other events to match/improve it. The current NB8A lap record was set in July/2012.
Most first-timers at Wakefield Park will struggle to set a time below 1:20 in their first attempt, even on modified cars, and many experienced drivers in the stock or near stock classes (classes 1 and 4) are consistently running in the 1:16 - 1:18 bracket.
Even for someone extremely talented, I'd suggest running at least one year in a stock class, then slowly start to modify the car and move up classes. You should start considering the MX5 Cup once you can consistently run sub 1:15 laps. Remember that running 1:15 in a sprint event designed for drivers not to encounter traffic ahead is easier than achieving such lap times in race traffic.

I had issues straight away with sign on. Don't try to be efficient with ARDC at sign on, they do not accept that sort of behaviour. All forms must be incorrect and blank before entering the queue.
I then got drug tested just after sign on, they couldn't even wait for me to do scrutineering.
Scrutineering was fairly straight forward for me other than the questions over my re-tested fire extinguisher.
At least there was no checking of head height to roll bar this time like the last round of last year. I don't see the point in that since Road Registered cars don't even need a roll bar. I'll happily remove it if the scrutineer signs that they believe it is safer for me not to have it installed. I should prepare a form just in case.
I then got picked out for the Nitto NT01 tyres as well.
I am going to have to ask for the proof of the decision the "Panel" made outlawing Nitto NT01 in Type 1 and 2 as I am up for new tyres for the next round and was going to repeat buy.
I suppose they have minutes for the meetings which should include reasons for and against.
I am just disappointed that I will now have to spend a lot more $$$ on tyres if I want to continue using R-Specs.
My last and only set of 225/45/15 NT01's were only $720 fitted. And they were new tyres, not old stock.
The other current 225/45/15 are Kuhmo V70A's which when last quoted where up around $1400-1500 which I would never pay. I have used them before on 16's and I hated them. Easily the worst tyre I have ever used in the wet, and I love wet conditions.
It seems you can also get Toyo R888R's in this size now as well according to their website. I will definitely have to find the price on them as unlike most I actually liked the previous R888's.
I would be happy with 215/50/15 as a compromise which equal Yokohama A050's.
And it seems that Gordon Leven is the dealer for Toyo R888R's according to Toyo's website. I guess I can see the price difference between them and A050's in one go at least.
I do not want to go onto 225/50/15 as they will rub my perfect unrubbed, unmodified guards.
The logical answer would tell me to go with 205/50/15 as that has the widest range of tyres available but I am giving up width in doing so.

Re: 2017 CAMS NSW Superprints Championship
Ran out of edit time.
Regarding sign on.
I like what they were trying to do dividing the sign on times up for different groups, but ARDC are just so inefficient.
They spend so much time writing down crap they should already have from the online entry.
And they never supply the correct forms for you to have ready to go so you have to waste further time writing down crap for them.
It should be as simple as:
1. You have a signed disclaimer form ready to go or better yet already digitally recognised online such as the CAMS entry system.
2. They check your license and car details and tick you off the list
3. They give you your scrutineering sheet
Every other club is like that so I have no idea what they are doing. Or maybe they have no idea what they are doing.
Regarding the running of the day considering that the Groups were organised into only 6 with 20 odd cars in each it was disappointing to only get 4 runs.
A lot of this could be blamed on bad driving through out the day, but they could have squeezed in a shortened run 5 for each group at the end as the day ended early.
With only 6 groups I thought we should get 5 runs and have a high likelihood of getting 6.
If you read the regs it said this.
It also says
We finished up at 4PM. It would be great if work was like that as well. Just finish up an hour early each time.
So they didn't quite follow the regs. Unless there was an identified safety issue???
It was also very strange of them to put a double entered open wheeler in group 4 with various large cars. It should have been in group 5.
I was happy with the group I was in, Group 5 all MX-5's. I was right up in the front pack of 4 including myself, Tony, Russell and Phil and only had to lap cars on the first 2 runs.
I did however notice that run 3 was cut very short, only achieving 3 timed laps. The other 3 runs had 5 timed laps. No red flags or any issues so no idea why.
They broke there own regs in doing so again.
I started out front and did not get 8 minutes.
If they are going to pick on my tyres through vague wording in the regs I will have to start picking on their regs when they break them themselves.

The proposed minimum number of runs on the day will be 4 (Note: The Event will not be concluded when this minimum is achieved. Event will only be concluded early for safety reasons or if no competitors available)

Start time 0900hrs Finish time 1700hrs

Thanks guss
You make some good points.
I am wondering how much lap times would drop using race slick tyres.
I have no idea what sort of lap times to expect. I have not done any circuit racing and not done a track day since 1977 (Amaroo in 240Z). I drove at Amaroo, Oran Park, Catalina Park in the early 70's and then got into rally-sport.
I have always been interested in circuit racing but never got around to it.
My current medium term aim is Targa Tasmania 2018 (April) but want to do some circuit stuff before that.
I will start out running a stock NB8A at MX-5 Club of NSW track days and hillclimbs. If it is too frustrating running stock I will do some minor mods to suspension +LSD.
At the age of 66 I don't have time to spend a year 'building up'. I might have to join another club to get more track time. Either that or run in Supersprints.
If I can get below 1:16 around Wakefield on road tyres by about mid year I figure I could Then go to slicks for MX-5 Cup races. I only need to get below 1:16 to qualify for entry to the cup. I would be happy to run at the back of the field with stock NB8A + slicks and I'm sure there would be someone to race.
If I like it enough I would then build a dedicated MX-5 Cup car later in 2018.
If i can't get below 1:16 in the stock NB8A by mid year I would consider some mods but I think the main thing is track time. I might turn out to be crap on the track, in which case I will stick to track days and tarmac rallies. I won't go back to gravel as it is too fast these days with 4wd + turbo and as always too hard on the car.
The MX-5 is pretty much unique as the cheapest way into motorsport.

Re: 2017 CAMS NSW Superprints Championship
Good observation about the Clubman at the front of group 4. The driver was in a double entered car and seemed to be very inexperienced ... they had to put her somewhere but here was NOT a smart decision. She had a spin on the first lap at turn 5 then caused the second red flag when she parked it on turn 1 in a dangerous position (and was severely chastised by CoC as a result). The car had mechanical issues and was taken home immediately afterwards. Not sure if we'll see much more of it again.

OT sorry; but do you mean slicks, or semi-slicks?
To get any real value out of proper slick racing tyres I'd suggest that as a starting point you'll need modified suspension, plus a wheel alignment to suit.
