Bought a dud :(

Postby JN8x » Sun Sep 04, 2016 8:26 pm

Hey guys, just purchased a 1990 Imported mx5 a few weeks back with 197k kms on the clock. Compression tested it came up good 190 across all cylinders. Ended up purchasing it.

Knowing well it will be a fixer upper I gave it a full service all fluids and checked for oil leaks. Noted down the rear main, front crank seal and cam seals for major leaks.

After doing the full service. I took the car home and it has sat for a few weeks started it up and bam. It's burning oil. Constant blue smoke out the exhaust.

Figured it's either the valve stem seals or oil control rings since its consistently blowing smoke to the point it cannot be dríven.

Considering just to sell it off and take a loss at this point I just don't want to deal with it.

Sorry guys just had to vent

Thanks for listening

Have you chucked a fresh PCB valve in?

Unfortunately not. But I did take out the original valve and found that it has failed and was broken in pieces. I capped off the manifold side so it would run properly to see if it would change and nothing.

1.6L engines are worth <300 bucks in good nick and can be installed in an afternoon, stress less.

Thanks dan!

I have been looking for one but the best I could find was from automotive plus up here in Brisbane which I was quoted $990 but they have none in stock.

Would you happen to have any?

This is applicable to auto transmissions

I remember reading about this but can't find the post

Blue smoke: Blue typically means that engine oil is being burned in the combustion chamber. In rare cases, when a vehicle is equipped with a transmission that uses a device called a vacuum modulator valve (to soften shifts between gears according to engine vacuum) the diaphragm can break inside the valve and cause transmission fluid to be sucked into the engine via the vacuum line feeding the valve and burn.

This maybe the cause of the blue smoke....if it's an auto?

It's a manual but thank you for your help, I'm thinking of just finding a cheap engine as dan stated earlier and just swapping it out. Need to find a long nose donor as that is what's in it ATM.

I think big nose implies long nose.

It's been a while since I looking into it but I thought there was small nose, big nose and long nose cranks.

As the owner of one 1.6 and carer of 2, this is my understanding too.
Short nose - Original crank in the first 1.6L NA's, problematic.
Long Nose - short term solution by Mazda to fix the short nose issue.
Big Nose - Final solution, carried through to the 1.8L

Both our 1.6's are Big nose now. The short nose in one had done 400K Km before being overheated and doing the exhaust valves on no 3 cyl. The other car came with a replacement big nose already installed.
