Leaking cam angle sensor nb8b

Postby DECIM8 » Sun Jun 12, 2016 10:29 pm

Hi all,

The seal on the cam angle sensor at the rear of cam cover is leaking. Drivers side.

Before you suggest it's the same as a na engine. The nb is electronic.

Can anyone suggest the correct o ring for that sensor? This Is the vvt engine don't forget. I require the correct size

I won't require original. They arnt worth it.

I thought the cam sensor was at the front on the nb8b.
Pretty sure it's just a freeze plug where the na cas was.

Being a little tipsy and totally blunt here..

If you are going to replace it yourself (sounds like it, yeah?) then you are comfortable removing it.

So if you arent willing to remove it and measure it yourself, a 2 minute job, Id be surprised if someone here will be willing to do it for you just for the fun of it, but I could be wrong. Good luck.

I think this board is becoming a little less tolerant of fools and bludgers.

I like that.

I would like it even more if the search function worked so I posted this

Thanks dumb ass. Define how you would measure a destroyed o-ring.

Clearly the 2000 has vvt which has the cas at the rear left of the cam cover. It's installed with a single bolt. I thought potentially someone would know so I wouldnt have to go find the part but managed to use the broken oring to establish rough thickness. It worked and all is well.

I'd post what size it was, but seems this forum is not for helping and rather for taunting.

Clap Clap.

P.s just noticed your intoxicated at the time so all is forgiven. I take my kind words back.

Go to your local auto store, remove CAS sensor (1 plug and 1 bolt), find an O-ring that fits, re-install sensor.

Mine measures approx.: 15.6mm ID, 18.5mm OD, 1.5mm thickness

you measure the area the ring sits in, rather than the ring.

This is a better way to measure anyway, since O rings degrade and stretch over time.

Oring is not same size as the hole, good idea though. Its actually quite thin in comparison.

Measure the hole, measure the o-ring groove and pump the numbers into the many o-ring-speccing programs / sites on the interweb.

Or save the hassle and buy genuine, in this case surely even a genuine o-ring can't be more than a few $$$ ?

O rings are made to standards- Mazda engineers are unlikely to select a non std size O ring. The usual thing is to see if its a serviced part which will be cheap anyway or remove it and go to a bearing supplier or Bursons etc.

Not sure if it's the same as the NA8 BP motor CAS o-ring, but details of that are:
Model #: BS222
Part #: 0509 7704
1.75" OD (44mm)
1.5" ID (37mm)
1/8" section (3mm)

Nope, VVT engines have a little, roughly "finger" sized, CAS.

The o-ring is the same for all NB's. In fact, NB8A's don't actually need the o-ring as its not in oil but that's not the point.

If you know someone with an NB MX5, you could grab one to check it out. I doubt Mazda will stock the oring anyway.
