Oil temp sensor location

Just after some guidance as to where I should put my oil temp sensor. I know the sump is the ideal location but the engine is in the car and I'm not drilling the sump without taking it off. I have an oil filter relocation I'm in the process of installing so it could go in there but I had a brain wave. Since the car is an SE there's the factory oil catch can with a drain back to the sump. I'm no longer using the drain and thought about sticking the sensor in my blanking plate? I had a look tonight and there seems to be something in the sump roughly 20mm in but I'm unsure what that is. Is there any reason why I shouldn't stick the sensor there?

You can get a oil temp sensor with the same thread as the sump.

Why stuff around with a sump plug or drain plug? Just use the relocation kit fitting, and take it from the oil out of the pump, not oil into the block. You are using a cooler?

The sensor doesn't fit into the filter relo block. Will need a small mod to make that work. Why drill the sump when there is already a hole which may work? Thats what I want to know. I also don't want to mount the sensor in the sump drain hole since it is very low and more susceptible to damage than other locations.

Its the right location for the sensor and you could have done it already.

If you're worried about it hitting something in the sump then make your block off plate out of 10mm or something so that the sensor doesn't go as far in. Once install hand crank the engine and make sure it's all clear.

In terms of easiness, if you are running AN oil lines just get an inline gauge adapter and put it in the main feed from the oil pump. I much prefer all my sensors located off the engine for simplet wiring and easier removal of the engine.

haha... I was going to add that, as it's one of the main reason I do it. Then I figured no-one else has stupid crazy cams like mine. I run as many sensors as possible attached to the chassis rather than the engine. It's what I'll be doing with my CTS when I run the electric water pump too.

I have a 500mm long K-type thermocouple that mounts in the dipstick tube and dips into oil in the sump. I would call it semi-permanent, but yet another way of doing it.

Madjak has raised a good point about engine removal, vibration etc. Will take it into consideration. Putting it in the catch can drain is something I can get done this weekend though.
