I am looking at mounting it behind the radiator, using the oem A/C fan location.
I do not have this fan anyway.
Would make hosing simple and tidy.

I believe as long as it is tight to the face of the radiator then it should get air flowing through it.
I am also thinking (maybe dreaming), that the Coolant temp will help keep the oil temp from getting too cool.
Would anyone disagree ?

Would i get a larger temp drop having the cooler out in front?
I do not want to sacrifice much cooling ability.

Having zero understanding of what air will do when it has to go through 2 coolers, i would love to hear from people with such knowledge.

D,
Fitting behind the rad is where mine is to be fitted once it gets back from being modified. Try and keep it close is a good idea but not too close as you
don't want to be rubbing against anything (the cooler will move slightly) I'm the exact reason for there as its simple and neat (KISS theory) and the rad protects the cooler
No-one has really mentioned what size cooler, Mocal suggest on N/A 10 row up to 2 liter, 13 row for turbo. I've gone 13 row and thermostat.
As for oil temp guage I run mine in the sump. You asked about drilling and tapping the sandwich plate, go with what Madjak suggested or get a machinist to do it for you,
as for drilling the block WTF????

This is the mount plate using the a/c fan mounts, the cooler mounts to the bottom plate and a blanking plate fits above the cooler and forces air through the cooler and mounts the top of the cooler. The sides are sealed to the radiator.

(cripes the rad looks bad in photos  & ignore the welding, my boiler maker/welder is on holidays.)

Why not drill the block. thats literally how mazda does it for pressure and you can run a temp sensor in that location too. Your sump oil temp is hardly representative of the gallery oil temp if it travels from the sump through a cooler then to the gallery.

Almost exactly a year on and I have some more questions. Doing some reading on MT.net about coolers and I think a 16 row core might not be sufficient for me. Car will see the track and will one day have the turbo upgraded, so minimum 250rwhp and it seems I may need something bigger. I'm now thinking of going down the path of putting it behind the radiator and either just removing one of the OEM fans or putting two slim line fans in and having one fan drawing air through a large 20/25row core? Pending space of course. Am I over thinking this and should just stick a 16 row in the windscreen scuttle? I'll duct the radiator and have a vented bonnet as well to ensure airflow.
