Nankang Sportnex NS-2R review

Postby Steampunk » Mon Feb 15, 2016 2:16 pm

I bought a set of 195/50R15 series several months ago and have done over 2,000km, several mountain runs, and a track day.
Excellent UHP tyres, loads of dry grip and due to the stiff side-walls, turn-in feel is quite sharp.
I've hardly dríven them in the rain, and never gone through any kind of decent puddles, but they didn't feel slippy at all in the wet. They have deep and wide grooves.
Noise is a neglible factor for me as I almost always drive topless, and the exhaust/intake simply drowns out everything, so I can't really say if they are noisy or not. They don't sound like heavy-duty 4WD tyres... does that help?

On a half overcast, dry, 29deg track day, they held up well. I set them up to be 30psi hot which I think is too low as they were pushing wider than what I would have liked on long, fast sweepers. Lots of "marbling" (or whatever it's called when tread sloughs off and congeals) at this pressure.
32psi hot would probably be better.
Steering feedback is excellent. Quiet squealing when they reach grip limit, and easily corrects itself when the rear steps out a bit.

Takes a couple hard corners to warm them up.

The only real negative is upon very hard braking in a straight line. I had a couple of moments of locking up the fronts which were very unexpected, although this is in comparison with the grip provided by Advan Neova AD08R, so the NS-2R just needed a bit of getting used to insofar as not stomping on the pedal too hard, too abruptly.

Am keen on using them again next track day with higher hot pressures.

In summary, awesome tyres for the price and I'm very happy with them. You're unlikely to achieve PB times at the track if you've used Direzza Star Specs, Advan AD's..., etc. , but road performance is comparable to these more expensive/established peers.

If you suffer from "brand snobbery", these will cure you

I just bought a set of these. Keen to see how they go. Are you using the 180TW or 120TW version?

They come in either 120 (Track) or 180 (Street) tread wear rating.

Good question, i forgot they made 2 types. I have the 180 wear rated ones.

It would be very interesting what the 120 series are like on track compared to 180< series Direzza and Advans

Approx half a second slower. Last monday I could only do 69.1 with NS-2R then 68.5 with AD08R.

How consistent were your times? Might find it's a spacer issue instead of the tyres with the difference in times.

Quite consistent (obviously taking out of the equation getting held up in traffic) and faster times as the day progresses.

Don't know what you mean about spacer issues... Wheel dimensions? If so then its negligible. Only difference is offset. 37 vs 35. Perhaps a few hundred grams in overall weight.

Yeah, spacer issues is the space between the seat and the wheel. I have found no point comparing tyres when I am driving inconsistently. You might find they'll get a bit faster next time you go out. I know the ad08r's are good for low 64s and the odd 63, so I am going to guess these probably have few more seconds in them.

Nankang are known for cheap rubber. The telling point will be when these are 7500-12500km old. Toyo's are great also until the are half life old.

I might look at some 195/55R15s for the rally car.

Oops forgot to add, that the rubber issue is probably moreso an issue for the 120TW than the 180TW varient.

Agreed.

Loved my Proxes4 when I got them, super grippy etc.

After a while they just kind of went to being ok, still had grip but nothing special.
Plenty of tread left, but yeah the last half of their life was average rather than great.

What distributor did you find these at? I'm up for a new set of tyres, but it seems that the locak Jax quick fit just has a pile of traditional brands - no even Kuhmos etc.

An independent shop, Hackett's Discount Tyres to be precise (free plug).
