I start my car up and let it idle whilst I get ready to get it off the trailer, as I pack up, etc then take it around the pits slowly. The same goes when we're getting ready for our session, and with the first lap, oil gets to about 80deg...it's more than enough.

Well with my first day with my oil temp gauge and hitting close to 140 Celsius I need to do something.

Check the sensor calibration. I had hot oil temps, at least I thought I did till I checked it with another sensor. A non contact temps sensor can also be used to check temps.

Makes me feel a little more confident.

Can you explain the non contact sensor bit?
I am a bit daft :oops:

It is a Speco electric gauge with the sensor mounted in a oil filter sandwich plate.

I am not sure how to calibrate it??

An infra red Thermometer.

One way to calibrate is to have a small oil bath, heat some oil up to the required temp and put the sensor into this. See what the gauge reads with the sensor in the oil bath make sure you have an accurate thermometer in the oil bath to compare against. Another way is to send it away for a calibration check.

So a infrared thermometer at say the oil filter should read pretty much the same as the oil temp right?

I might give that a go.

I get about 80 Celsius on the street and around 100 on the highway.

So was your high readings from a faulty sensor ??
What readings were you getting ??

Careful - I am told the colour of the surface will affect the readings of an IR thermometer so I would check that out first (black is supposed to be best for accuracy I was told). I don't know firsthand that it is so, or if it is, how much discrepancy there might be. Anyone here know?

Won't matter if both surfaces are the same colour though ...

I have read about Oil Temp sensors in Sandwich plates giving false high readings from heatsoak via the block.
Could there be truth in this and my temps not be so high?

Are you guys running oil temp sensors in sandwich plates??

I have a temp sensor in a sandwich plate and while it showed very high temps (>120c) after 2 hard laps, it also went back down to normal temps after 2 laps putting around, so heat soak didn't appear to be a problem for my usage.

Yeah by the time i am back in the pits i am back under 120 degrees and not long afterwards back under 100.

So maybe i really am getting that high a temp on the track.

I think i have to get a cooler sorted before the next Track day!!!

When you think about it on the inlet side the block should not be hotter than the water temperature (much) and the oil similar or somewhat hotter. So the block temperature is probably being dríven by the oil temperature if it is higher than the water temperature. Cool the oil and cool the block but there is probably not a lot in it.

I think I get that the block would really only be as hot as the oil but the last sentence I am little confused ??

He's saying that the block temp is likely to be close enough to oil temp that heat soak isnt a problem.

Make the oil colder, and the block should also be colder.

I thought that there might be radiant heat affecting the sensors readings.

Either way knocking 30 degrees off temp would be a good thing.
