Brake pads for Track Days

Postby craigj » Wed Jul 24, 2013 2:02 pm

Hey Guys,
What brake pads, front and back, would you recommend for an 2005 NC running track days in unmodified class. The poor car normally does double duty running two people. My plan would be to drop them in the night before and swap them back out the next day and run std pads on the street.

Cheers,
Craig

A lot of people here use Hawk HP plus pads. Still good when cold for the street and easily up to the task of stopping a stock or slightly modded MX5 on the track. Also has benefits of relatively quiet and low dust for a high performance pad and very easy on the rotors.

Probably Hawk part nos HB523N.539 and HB522N.565 but you should check on http://hawkperformance.iwebcat.com/_Mem ... detail.asp

There are other good pads but if you decide to buy something else then it would pay to check your selection on this forum before you buy. People here have plenty of experience with a big range of track pads and there are some so-called performance pads that we would definitely not recommend.

Just starting off then the stock Mazda original NC pads are fine.
Once you get better and start standing on the brakes, move up to the Hawk HP+ or EBC Yellows on the front. Keep the stock pads on the rear.
You won't need more than these running stock. Don't forget to change your brake fluid.

Whatever you do, don't put Hawk HPS on an NC in the hope of better braking.
Note don't confuse HP+ with HPS. HP+ is a good pad for track work.

They have less bite when cold than stock.
Less bite when hot than stock.
Make more dust than stock.
And fade at Wakefield. Never faded the Factory pads at Wakefield.

Only positive is that they are $67 USD + Shipping from Goodwin.

I find the marketing false as they are marketed as a Sports Pad that is an upgrade from stock pads.
Not in the case of Stock NC pads.

(and NA and NBs)

Compounds.

1521 for Daily drivers low Dust.
AX6 for track and road.
XP10 for track work ( the reason not for daily drive is the occasionla squeal when cold) 90% of our customer use these.
XP12 for the serious supersprinter and racing. This is the compound we run on all our race cars.

Why Carbotech? Unlike Hawks they work well on your outlap, We used Hawk Blues and wore out discs. XP10 will stop quicker and do not eat discs.
