Running a harness with standard seat?

Postby Moto » Fri May 15, 2009 11:42 am

I remember seeing at a recent track day someone running a 4 point harness with the standard seat.

I have a BD rollbar with mounting points and I thought it would be a good idea to get a harness since the standard seatbelt isn't going to do much in the rare case of a roll over (touch wood) and it's never tight enough to hold me in the seat while cornering.

Can anyone comment on the setup? Do you have to cross the rear lashes to get a tight fit?

I've done it, it works fine IMHO
You will need to replace the lower seat belt mount with a harness one (just unscrew old, screw in new)
Also on the tunnel side you will need to drill a hole, put in a backing plate, then the mount.

Shouldn't need to cross the shoulder ones, I didn't
Just be careful putting down the soft top, the glass will scratch on the harness mounts sticking up

Yeah I always put a doubled over towel over the eyelets on the brown davis when using a harness. I don't cross mine over and have never had a problem.
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

To those with NBs or late NAs: how did you mount the inboard lap belt eye bolt? Is the only option to do as Alex says?

Looks like it would be hard to replace the seatbelt buckle bolt due to the proximity of the centre tunnel...

I have an oval eyelet bolt in there, it's a tight fit.

I replaced the existing seatbelt bolts on the floor with oval eyelet bolts on both sides. Then the waist straps on the harness are easily clipped in when you need them. Also have an eyelet bolt screwed into the BD rollbar mounting point. Works a treat with the stock seat although I'd recommend that you loosely fit the shoulder straps and clip them in place before putting your helmet on. I found it awkward doing it in the opposite direction.

NB's didn't have one on the tunnel side :frown: which means we have to drill a hole

I have also seen a strong metal plate attached in the same spot on the seat with a ring for the harness to click into.

Running a harness with standard seat?

I have the same problem but I have been doing some reading:

I don't want to drill a hole thought the transmission tunnel and put a pice of aluminum foil as a backing plate I think the transmission tunnel is too thin and flimsy and the aluminum foil is too much added weight.

I hear of people using this to replace/with the stock seat belt buckle (seat belt clip is bolted to stock rails on the NB; There is a M10 high tensile strength bolt easy to undo and bolt this extra bit in)

Image

I have seen a harness where by the bit circled in red clips directly into the stock seat belt buckle. (Would be nice and easy to use and install but now you can't use both stock seat belt and harness at the same time)

Image

I enjoyed reading this pdf on how to install a harness its very useful info I highly recomend you read it.
http://www.schrothracing.com/sdocs/2009 ... ctions.pdf

I really want to have these clips its like quick release (rock climbing style) so can quickly install harness on the spot or ditch it on the way home.

Image

I want to know how people are installing the 5th point (anti sub straps) on the 5 point harness??? (any one do it without the aluminum foil backing plates?)

Has anyone cut the harness to length ie get rid of any excess length to save weight or must we leave it alone???
every ounce counts

Get the clips it's a no brainer.
