I love the way the standard wheels look, do you think it'd be easy to get them custom made in a bigger size?

If you are looking to fill your guards more have you lowered the car yet? I also love the standard nb8b wheels, I dont know why you would change them, 16' is large enough IMO and 205s fill the guards nicely.

No doubt it would look tough, but I would have thought wheels that wide would ruin the handling balance too.

To your original question of 17x8 with a 35 offset.

NB8Bs came standard with 16x7 48 offset (I think) rims. Legally you can increase the diameter by 1”, width by 1” and track by 1”. (1" = 25.4mm) So your chosen rim is only just (0.2mm) outside the legal track width increase however I doubt that you would ever be pinged for that.

Tyre size for the 8” rim is either a 215 or 225 though you have fewer brand options around in the 225 size. DON’T try and fit a 205 to an 8” rim as the rim is too wide for this size tyre.

And remember you can “over-tyre” an MX-5 easily. By that I meant when you increase the unsprung weight, you decrease acceleration and handling of the car. If you add to the overall wheel diameter you also decrease acceleration.

So your saying basically, if I run a rim at 17x8 it needs to be super light, so it doesn't affect my performance, how much do my standard wheels weigh?. Wouldn't a wider tire mean more surface area on the road, so more grip? Cheers, diameter will be handled with the exhaust, and eventually a turbo

i wouldnt mind running a 17x8 on the track with some D03 Rcompounds at 215wide but they arnt cheap.. wheels or rubber. you would need to spend big dollars and get a rim that weighs in damn light to make it worth while.

having a low profile like that and a stiff side wall im sure you could play with the pressures endlessly
