Re: iPhone 3G vs. Audiolink, Round 1, FIGHT!
There are a number of issues with the i-Phone, apart from it being bulky, heavy and designed to drop out of your hand, and this problem sounds about par for the course.
It's a great gadget, but a lousy phone!
Only Apple could sell a 3G phone without a video camera, any means of extra storage or a battery that needs to be sent back to the manufacturer to have its battery replaced!

iPhone 3G vs. Audiolink, Round 1, FIGHT!
Artificial Life wrote:It will play music out of the car speakers, but incoming calls are only audiable on the internal speakers or the heaphones connected to the phone. The phone won't charge from the Audiolink connection (it complains that the accessory isn't compatible). The audio for video doesn't play out of the car speakers at all, only the headphone connection.
I'm not that surprised. The audiolink jack, from my understanding, is designed with players in mind, not phones. I would also suspect that there would be massive feedback problems...

Aussie 3G version is a POS;
-needs a specific 3G wall charger as voltages are difft to all other models
-bluetooth will not transfer files, MP3s (itunes arrrrrgggghhhh!)
-overpriced - $700 for 8gb, $900 for 16gb
-Can't imagine trying to repair one (if you break the screen you may as well bin it)
-can only get them on an expensive contract (Optus up here have no stock, Voda very limited)
-it is bloody HUGE
People who buy one deserve the pain for falling for the hype.

Oooh, but I do like the dyno software. Give it time and I will get a busted iphone for free and use it for the dyno feature...

I believe the 3G version needs an exact amount of voltage to charge thus a specific charger. Every other version could cope the fluctuating voltages thus any ipod style charger would work.
I sell phones everyday and I can't get excited about it. I fully expect a lot of silly questions from naive iPhone owners.

I'm sorry, did someone say dyno on your phone?

If only I had GPS...
[edit] Sorry, not sure if it actually has dyno stuff built in. It seems to have everything else though...

The iPhone looks good, but I'm waiting till I find out whether it is compatible with my Clarion head unit before I buy one.
The answer to the question of Life, the Universe and Everything is not 42..... it is MX5.

1st thing. You can charge it with any other ipod adapter, I have done so already as it simply uses USB.
- The bluetooth will get more and more updated. As for transfer of files its called copyright protection.
- I think you will find similar devices dont have the storage or as many features yet still come in at around the same price.
- Thats why you have insurance and a warranty. I have had insurance on all my phones as they are such an easy item to damage or loose.
- Its not that huge. In fact its about the same size as my Blackberry 8300 that I carry for work.
- The stock issue is out of Optus' control as they order from apple.
People seem to forget this was designed as a smart phone. So it was designed to have web browsing, gps, email and phone.

1. I said wall charger, not a USB connector
2. Friggin heck, were not in caveman land. Everybody else's bluetooth has full functionality out of the box. Plus how are you going to update it - send it to Apple. There goes a few weeks of your life. Copyright? None of us have any MP3s do we?
3. Minimum of $700 IS expensive for ANY 'phone'. It was touted by Apple as being inexpensive.
4. Insurance and warranties are limited. Also only usually last around a year. Plus you need to be on a contract plan to get any insurance. Insurance costs around $8 a month, thus you need to pay $100 pa insurance on your phone!
5. It is huge. You are comparing a besser block with a brick.
6. Apple suck. If there is no stock, why launch it?
So, you work at an Optus store?

They all use a USB Connector, the voltage therefore is not different.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USB it is a standard interface!
your still stuck in the frame of mind thinking its a phone. its a pda / smart device. It does more then most phones!!
Insurance isnt that limited you can pay as little as $5 or as much as $10 per month. Much like any other insurance.
So your saying its huge? Have you looked at a blackberry or N95?
No I dont work at an optus store or for any telecommunications company.....

Ummm errrrr.
I personally believe the 'STOCK ISSUE' on Iphones will last all the way up until about December 20th..
THEN you will see a bunch released to pre-paid and outright.
Call me cynical, but I'll bet my left nut I am right.
