Michelin Pilot Preceda 2

Michellin have released an update of the Preceeda with better wet weather grip (yay!) and improved braking performance. They are also supposed to be quieter and ride smoother than the Preceeda 1's I have currently.

If Michelin has stock then I'm getting a set fitted on Saturday for $217 each :mrgreen:

so I'll let you know if they feel any better than the original version. And what is it with tyre prices? I was quoted between $217 and $295 for the same tyre! :shock:

Brilliant news - I'm after a new set of boots and can't really decide between another set of the Dunlops DZ101, the Toyo T1R or the Maxis MA-Z1. Are the Michelins W rated now and where did you get your quote?

Why don't Bridgestone make the RE070s in a 205/45/16???

Casey,

They are now W speed rated.

I got the quote from Wheels at Kirrawee. They are a dinky die Michelin dealer so they shouldn't be selling any parallel import crap.

They arrived at the tyre place yesterday. So all going to plan they'll be fitted up on Saturday morning. mmmmmmmmmm new tyre goodness. :mrgreen:

Hi Garry. Your report on these after you have worn them in will be very interesting but the way Sydney's weather is going there is not much chance of you trying them in the wet

if they're better than the preceda 1's that the NC has, i'll be a happy boy, coz they are damned good :mrgreen:

Well maybe I'm being over cautious, but there are three reasons I would only fit the correct tyres to my car (all NB8Bs are meant to have W rated tyres):

1. To not give an insurance company even a sniff of a chance to reject any claims, or ambulance chasing lawyers a chance to attribute blame/neglegence.

2. W tyres have been tested to hold together under higher stresses then lower speed ratings. It would not be particulalry clever to de-spec your tyres from what the manufacturer recommends.

3. Mazda designed the vehicle, built the vehicle and tested the vehicle and knows what's best for it. I put greater regard to Mazda's technical expertise then the RTA's "don't speed and you'll be safe, so H rated tyres are fine" mantra.

i wasn't being sarcy casey......simply reiterating that the current precedas are \"W\" rated

.......ppl have questioned it before & i don't know why..........the preceda is michelins top road tyre :mrgreen:

No worries AJ. Obviously in your 17" size they are W rated, but I'm fairly certain that in the 205/45/16 they are only a V rated tyre.

Yes, the old model was only V rated.

Picked them up this morning but only did a lap around the city. Initial impression was that they were very slippery out of the box. But this has improved as the mould release has worn off. They are quieter and ride better than the old tyres, but then dont all tyres when they're new?

I drove through a shower on the way home and they had more grip than the guy beside me in the MR2 Spider with 18\" rubber. But thats not saying much, it looked like he was driving on slicks.

More testing is needed though before I can make a definative comment.

As an added bonus which I didn't know about between 1st May and 31st June Tyre Power is giving away a $50 Coles/Myer gift voucher with every set of Michelin of BF Goodrich tyres. :mrgreen:

Don't know what the worrying points are for those in dry Sydney.

From the blurb the only thing they have done is to improve wet weather performance, something that wasn't a problem. The only area where I find them suspect is in just damp conditions and that is a compound compromise towards high speed cornering.

I'm no expert but better wet weather performance to me means more grooves. And more grooves mean more tread blocks. More tread blocks mean quicker over heating in the dry conditions. Unless they have developed a system for the blocks to interlock and yet disperse water as well.

No matter, Precedas are an excellent tyre.

i had a peeky boo at some development tyres that went out to Mt Cotton for appraisal from Michelin CB, bout 6 months ago it was, they had interlocking tread blocks.....they looked f&^%$g awesome!!........sign of things to come maybe???

as i said above, if the new precedas are supposedly better than the ones we're running, i'll be lining up for a set when due...............i haven't struck any sort of probs with these ones yet :mrgreen:

Last tech night for the NSW club was with Toyo and they talked about interlocking tyres also.

I think the â€œoldâ€ Precedas are great. As can be seen in my track times below. The NC was the fastest car on road tyres around Queensland Raceway at Natmeet. Quicker than a lot of turbo and supercharges MX5s running semi-racing rubber. Not bad for first time at the circuit.

It has to be kept in mind though that they are not a race tyre but a high performance tyre and therefore suffer from block squirm and overheating when put on the track. On the road I donâ€™t think you would get to overheat the tyre.
