You have commocruise, yeah.

You have a great dirt motorsports club at Toronto, (Westlakes Auto Club) they do tonnes of motorkhana and khanacross, which is tonnes and tonnes of fun and very cheap motorsports, driver skill is key here not big bucks.

You also have the MG car club of Newcastle who have a small private Hillcimb track very well suited to new racers in MX5s, these are the two places I got my beginner experience.

Of course then you have things like the Mattara Hillcimb once a year, thats the big race at King Edward park in Newcastle.

Then there is Bulladelah Hillclimb an hour north which is great.

Then there are the local fellas who go down to skidpan and drift days at easter creek and the wicked wednesday drags, and then of course wakefield.

MX-5 Club track days and Supersprints at Sydney Motorsport Park and Wakefield Park are nearly always on weekends. We have a club track day at SMP South today. Come and have a look if you're free. :D

The club days are run at thE South Circuit Eastern Creek, and Wakefield Park. They do a great job running them, and have to be one of the best value days for your buck around. Great environment to learn too.

Pretty sure you can still do your first event without a club membership but will need one after that. CAMS licence to run on EC or Wakefield, or AASA? for Wakefield?

BD bar won't need official CAMS certification if you're just doing club days and supersprints.

You need club membership to get a CAMS licence though. It's not that expensive and you get a $20 discount on each club day so you may it back pretty quickly.

You can get your MX-5 Club membership HERE. As mentioned by Spencer, you will need this for a CAMS L2S licence.

Once you have your car club membership number (within minutes of applying above), the application form for a CAMS Level 2S licence is HERE. Note that paying the AIMSS Levy is not compulsory, and the "urgent" fee is unnecessary because most licences are processed within a week anyway. Don't forget to rip off the slip on the last page, which gives you a 30-day licence, valid from the time your car club representative signs it.

If you only plan to run at Wakefield Park and excluding events run there under CAMS permit (eg. state Supersprint rounds), then you do not a CAMS L2S and can make do with a AASA licence available at Wakefield Park for $50 per year.

Bryan is there any chance of future club days at SMP Amaroo/South running under AASA regs? I understand that the circuit is available under AASA (eg FoSC in August). Is there a particular reason the club is still running SMP days under CAMS regs?

I understand that's a new development at SMP. Something for us to investigate.

Question for the mx5 club track days, are you required to have a roll bar installed to participate?

No, just a car in good condition.

On a stock(ish) car the scrutineers will check that the car has:
legal tyres (at the start of the day)
tight wheel nuts
firm brake pedal
no leaks
no steering play
firmly mounted seats
seatbelts in good nick
no loose objects in cabin and boot and no flapping bits
clean glass and mirrors with no cracks
good bonnet catch
working brake lights

In addition to that your minimum preparation should include at least 25% remaining life in the brake pads, freshish engine, gearbox and diff oils and brake fluid, clean coolant, correct tyre pressures, sound clutch and no driveline gremlins.
