Hi Conti, welcome to the obsession.
If the indicators are playing up as well I would hazard a guess that the indicator/ headlight switch may have loose contacts internally. I haven't had these apart on a mx5 so cannot advise best plan of attack.
Also you asked about Yoko tyres and prices, while your in Brissy check prices with TyreTech Albion, Ive found their prices beat Bob Janes and the advise is excellent.

Conti, I've just spent (wasted) part of this afternoon ripping out an aftermarket alarm. I'm sick of all the gremlins it causes. This is the third car I've had to fix up after these turkeys have fiddled about mindlessly with the electricals.
Maybe your Repeller alarm was installed by the same repulsive gorilla who screwed up my car. What's happening to your car is not normal.

I had problems with the stalk combo switch in a previous MX-5 as well. in my case the problem would cause the high beam to come on, but not pop the headlights up. The drain on the battery would eventually cause the alarm to trigger due to the voltage drop. It seemed to happen more in hot weather. I found that it would not happen if I pushed the headlight stalk forward whenever I parked the car.
Just my 2c worth.

Just reread your original post. You mention that sometimes your headlights come up/on when using the indicators. Mine did that too. It started after I had installed a modification called 'the flash to pass' mod, this mod would cause the headlights to pop up, breifly flash and then drop back down. I removed the mod and this stopped the headlights from popping up when using the indicator. It sounds like another inidication of a stalk combo switch problem.
Here is some more info on the flash to pass mod ==>> http://www.miata.net/garage/flash.html
