6UL vs SSR Type C vs RPF1
Hi guys
The wheel hunt continues.
Now looking at 6UL (new) vs SSR Type C (used) vs RPF1 (new).
The NA6 turbo is currently running NA8 upgraded brakes and QFM pads, considering upgrading to a BBK in the future and thus considering if this would impact wheel choice. Would upgrading to BBK be worthwhile? Is there a difference in clearance in the above three wheel options?
Cheers

Brake clearance depends on wheel size, which sizes are you looking at?

Re: 6UL vs SSR Type C vs RPF1
SSR type c are the only forged wheels of the three...

Sorry my mistake. Would prefer 15x7. Could potentially go to 15x8s but would rather not if it's not really necessary for a weekender.

I'm pretty sure the RPF1 in 15x7 will not clear any BBK or even the MX-5 "sport" brakes, might be OK with the NA8 brakes though. This isn't an issue with the 15x8s.

There's some photos in my garage thread showing type c brake clearance on nb8b sport brakes

Yep, will be fine with NA8 brakes.
NA8 brakes should be plenty for a weekender, looks like your already running good pads. Are you finding that you don't have enough braking?

Re: 6UL vs SSR Type C vs RPF1
I'm getting ahead of myself to be honest, car is arriving from interstate next week and I'm 95% sure I'm buying it (pending mechanic approval). It's currently running 17x7s which look cool but apparently provide a pretty brutal ride. So I'm planning to swap them to 15s as soon as is reasonable.
I'm just planning ahead on the wheels because one, I was thinking particularly big brakes might be handy if I push the car too hard (this will be my first turbo).
Would anyone else be concerned about buying an 11+ year old wheel like the Type-C? I've read online that they aren't necessarily very durable.

Huge brakes will only be necessary when you're at speed on a track. Even then a great set of pads on stock equipment is more than satisfactory.
Since it's your first turbo car, it would be better if you just installed reliable pads because if you were to make a panic jab at your brakes, you would be pulled up in a more controlled scenario whereas with overcompensated brakes you stand the risk of locking up the wheels and skidding.
The one thing that concerns me is are you JUST able to afford RPF1s and therefore will you then be buying cheap tyres?
What I'm getting at is it boggles my mind whenever people buy great wheels then put sh#tty tyres on.
Please consider the cost of good tyres when you make your choice of wheels.
PS: Before you get flamed for asking "what tyres should I get?" There's plenty of topics on here and the net in general.

Re: 6UL vs SSR Type C vs RPF1
Hi Steampunk
Thanks for your reply. Maybe I won't worry too much about a BBK, just wanted to future proof myself but what you say makes sense.
It's not that I can't afford the RPF1's, just that I like to get the best value for money. So if a forged wheel + tyres comes up, I don't want to overlook it without considering it.
If I were to get new wheels and tyres, I've been looking at Bridgestone RE0003s in a 195/50. They seem to review well and they have the 3 for 4 deal going at the moment. Can't help myself, love a good deal

Why do the wheels have to be forged?
Forget those 4 for the price of 3 deals as they are aimed at the gullible. You can easily match or beat those prices any day by ringing around.

Re: 6UL vs SSR Type C vs RPF1
They don't have to be forged, I was of the understanding that as a general rule of thumb forged is better than cast. Whether or not 11 year old forged wheels would be as good as new cast [flow formed?] wheels I don't know.
So I take it from your comments you think the RFP1 is the better pick of the options?
Oh and yeah, I wouldn't buy the RE0003 without getting other quotes first
Thanks for your tip though, I don't want to get ripped off.

Like many on here I got the re003 during a 4 for 3 sale. Works out at around $100 per corner, not bad at all!

Re: 6UL vs SSR Type C vs RPF1
What is a BBK?
I have 15x7 RPF1s on my stock NB8B if that helps your brake query
I thought they were the biggest brakes you could kind of straight swap to other models.

Lots of companies make big brake packages for the mx5.
TTT, do you have any pics of caliper clearance?
