What sort of insider info could you really have about tyres?



No doubt Bridgestone will say they perform better than RE002 in the wet and the dry, and that there's some patented technology in them (which will be a fancy way of saying they have tread)

They invited a few local car blogs to test these in Melbourne recently. Have only seen positive feedback from the people invovled, but it could be argued that these reviews were suspiciously positive.

James has a set on his nc. Got them last week. I'll direct him to this thread.

Given that the RE002 was considered a good all round / performance daily tire but off the pace in terms of pure dry grip to some competitors. the promo materials sound like they have targeted primarily a improvement in dry grip with this in mind.

They're stocked at some Bridgestone stores already.
Some say they won't do the 4 for 3 deal on them but some will.
Makes them very cheap, I'll be getting a set on my new wheels next week.

The word I got from tyre guy about these tyres is that they are black and round, and if you put air in them they work better than without......

Which insider gave you that info?

Unfortunately I've only run Michelin PS3 on the NC to compare to the RE003, so I don't know how useful I can be.

Compared to the PS3:

More dry grip.
Wet grip seems about equal between the two- I always felt the wet grip was a strong point of the PS3.

Less progressive with less warning when approaching the limit, but that limit is quite a bit higher.
I found it easier to control the slides once it had gone over, too. The PS3 took noticably longer to regain traction once lost and would screech about it.

Side wall much stiffer, judging by the more responsive turn in and directional changes.

Cheaper - I paid $585 fitted for the 4, which was with the buy 3 get one free deal.

As long as they don't wear terribly quickly, I'll not be going back to PS3, as the RE003 is IMO a significant improvement.

Thanks for the info James. I'm due for tyres and will be getting a set as soon as bob jane get them in. Getting them for $450 for all 4 (with the 4 for 3 special). Haven't been able to find any info on them other than those reviews from the test day. I figure they have to be better than then RE002's which I have on the front of my car at the moment, and then absolutely must be better than the ice skates I have on the back. They said bridgestone will have them on the 25th and it might take them a week to get them in, so still a little off finding out exactly what they're like.

Hi - I've just had RE003s put on my 1999 MX5 NB2 - does anyone have an idea what pressures I should run them at? The manual says 26 PSI and the guys who fitted them say 38 PSI (at 38 the ride is really rough).

Usually I go in the middle.

The manual tends to be a compromise for comfort.
38psi is a bit silly, it will work, but there's no need really.


I usually put 28psi in, give or take, sometimes more.
It's more important to have them even than to have them spot on to the pound.




for reference, higher pressures lower rolling resistance and can help with fuel economy, it can also help protect wheels from potholes etc (not an issue for an MX5 since they have lots of sidewall)

Think mine are 30 - 32. Much more than that and the ride gets a bit harsh.
