Hi All,

Bought my 02'NB8B , 3 months ago and noticed a month ago that there was a rattling coming from the rear brakes.

Took the car down to Mania and David told me it was probably the brake pads that were loose?

The brake pads did get tightened up, but now its back...
I'm thinking I might need pads or more...?

Anyone else have this problem? And what did you do?

they are proably right..
there is a backing plate which can fall out (mine did)
and there is also spring clips in there aswell.

put your hand through the wheel spoke and try and move the brake pad itself.
if it moves about 1cm in any direction then they are right. =)

I'd say your anti rattle clips are toast. Over a few heat cycles the rear ones loose their spring and the front ones go brittle and crack. They are designed to have a working life of one set of pads but mine didn't even last that long. When you bought a set of real genuine Mazda pads you used to get the anti-rattle clips and shims included. Mazda Aus in their infinite wisdom now sources their pads from a local supplier and no longer sell the anti-rattle clips or shims. I've heard that it's possible to make a set of NB8B \"big brake\" clips from the US models work but I've never tried. Failing that MX5partsUK still sell the genuine Mazda NB8B pads with shims and clips included.

You can try bending the current clips to apply some more force to the pads but it will only be a temporary fix. I'm guessing thats what Mania did.

Hmm... now I'm thinking do I get a new brake kit for a long term fix... i.e. aftermarket brake kit?
If Mazda arent giving the shims and anti rattle equipment...

Other than buying the parts from the UK would there be any other things that can be done to provide a long term fix at a relatively cheaper cost than reverting to an aftermarket brake kit.

I don't really want to be patching it i.e. short term solution...

PS. I am avoiding any pothole etc like the plague

I wouldnt upgrade to the NB brakes unless you NEED too.

You can still buy after market generic anti-rattle backing pad from M3
(M3 is a glue company or something simlar) - they sell post it notes and stuff...
they supply a metal substance which you peal back the metal pad and apply it to your brake pad which is used for anti-rattle. it looks like a backing plate once its attached and you throw it away with the pads as its glued on. also heat resistant so they wont fall off.

and yes, you can do all this, as i've done it about 3 months ago.
if worst comes to worst, i also have a spring set front & back which you can buy if you dont want anyone elses.

3M is the name of the company =)

But NB8B's use different anti rattle clips to the earlier models and apparently the \"big brakes\" from the US NB8B has a slightly different design clip to the AUS versions.

I am thinking get the 3M anti-rattle backing pad and the new brake pads put em all together...

OEM anti-rattle shims + 3M anti-rattle packing pad..
Double the anti-rattle goodness?
