Anyone built a high compression NC 2.0

Postby Custardtart » Tue Dec 31, 2019 10:49 am

Just wondering if anyone has home built a high compression NC engine? I was thinking a set of race cams, throttle bodies and 12:1 pistons together with a 2 mm overbore, 8k rev limit and a keyed crank should be a LOT of fun on track.

Here's a few tasty parts I found

https://fab9tuning.com/supertech-forged ... c-2-0-2-3/ anyone know at what compression ration you need to start modifying the head?

https://www.demon-tweeks.com/au/omex-di ... s-1004810/ these look interesting. A bit more money than the 1Goal intake but maybe not once you add in the cost of fuel rail included and no need to buy a cold air intake. Not sure how you'd fit the booster vacum line?

Makes more sense but the 2.0 makes a car eligible for more racing classes :P

Love to but I’m always conscious of wasting professionals time, especially as this is just a bit early research and I’d like to do as much myself as possible.

not sure exactly but i would think that peak cylinder pressure is going to determine when you are going to start to get things like valve float etc to happen more so than compression ratio alone.

Yes, looks like I’m going to have to do some research. The ford version of this engine has a massive following in the European clubman scene so looks like there’s a fair of info out there. 270bhp seems possible with compression, cams and throttle bodies

You are familiar with Brian Goodwin's 'NC Light'? That was a Formula Mazda (or something) engine over there, lots of good gear around ...

I never met a horsepower I didn't like (thanks bwob)

I'm currently building a high comp 2.4
L5 2.5 block bored .5mm o/s with SuperTech 11.1 pistons.
2.3 crank and H beam rods.
ARP Mains Studs and Head Studs.
Cams are being re-ground soon.
Will fit the DISI valve springs when the head is done.

Hoping to maintain the free revving character of the 2.0 but with more torque and power.

That looks good, what are you going to use it for?
You probably know this but the stock 2.5 rods are bulletproof for NA builds and their springs/valves are good for 7500 revs. Actually, the 2.5 head bolts are extremely good too. I wouldn’t bother with ARP’s if I was doing my 2.5 build again but I’d definitely up the compression with those pistons! If you fit an intake as well you should be up around 220 whp assuming a full exhaust as well?
I heard a lot of talk in the US about 2.5’s not reving like the 2.0, mostly from a forum sponsor who the went on to push their 2.4 builds but my experience is different, with a cam swap it revs every bit as good.

It's going to be a combo road & track car.
I already have the ARP's so I plan to use them. The rotating assembly will be balanced also.
I am fortunate to work for an engine reconditioner that is doing most of the engine machining work for free and also getting a decent discount on the parts. The 2.5 engine didn't really cost me anything either. The only significant expense so far has been the pistons.
Using the factory intake initially to keep it looking close to stock. but once it is up and running I will dyno it to see if I want to go further.

Nice. Will you key the crank? It seems these engines make power with more revs and with springs rods and pistons plus the crank balance you could see 9k revs with the right cam profile.
