Hi Guys. I recently bought the above. Car is great. Love everything about it except that it stops when it gets hot. The father of the girl I bought it from ahs replaced most of the electric bits trying to chase the fault. Last thing to replace id the "crank angle sensor" will this help? Maybe should take it to a place that can plug it in and diagnose the problem? Does the ar have a diagnosis ability. Thanks Simie

With those symptoms this should have been the first thing to replace!

How long after it cuts out does it take before you can re-start and run the car again?

Test: Run the car until it gets hot and cuts out, open the bonnet and pour a little water on the CAS to cool it. Does it start again straight away?
If yes, then there's the confirmation you need.

Ok thanks for the advice. Where abouts is the CAS, which means crank angle sensor I am assuming, where will I find that on the engine. Someone said it's near the harmonic balancer? Is that correct.? What should I be looking for. Thanks Simie

There is a Crank Angle Sensor and a Cam Angle Sensor. Replace both if you havent. Cam angle sensor is on the front left (driver side) of the cam/rocker cover and the Crank angle sensor is down near the crank pulley on the right (passenger side)

Ok thanks for that. I hope that will solve the problem. It is dangerous at the moment. I have been lucky that the 3 times that it has cut out I was able to just pull over safely.

Thats lucky, having an engine that cuts out at any time is not a good feeling.

Id say it would most likely be the Crank sensor. The signs the Cam sensor is playing up is hard to start when the engine is warm. Id still replace both if neither have been done. You may be able to find a bit cheaper but I got mine from MX5 Mania and they were great prices and great service and quick postage too.

What sort of money are we looking for those two sensors? The symptoms of breakdown are jerking a couple of times then it stops. Does the heat affect the sensors that much. It was a.stinking hot day yesterday. ..Sunday.

I just replaced my Cam Angle Sensor today as I have been having problems with the engine stalling when "hot" ( operating temp )
It was fine when traveling over 70/80Kph, If it was dríven hard but slowly the heat would build up in the engine bay and cause it to stall as the sensor went out of spec. If I put a bit of water on the sensor to cool it off it would start right up again.


Paid $150.00 at Automotive Plus for the part, its held by one bolt on the Top back drivers side of the engine, Very easy.

Mx5 Mania had the cam angle sensor for about $70 when I got mine a little while ago. The crank position sensor was about the same.

My mechanic bought one for $130 fitted.

Personally I wouldn't care if I paid $80 more than the cheapest price provided it gets me back on the road. Convenience is worth more to me.
