After 15 odd months as a MX5 owner and a few track days under my belt, just out of curiosity and after speaking to Geoff from GFR, I thought I'd look at whats for sale in 2f cars.
Bloody hell!!! there's so many to choose from it's not funny. SO how come?
Are people building NC race cars, getting out of racing or what?
I've prepared race cars in Group C for Bathurst, 12 hr GTR and worked setting up customers cars and I know whats involved in starting from scratch, Many hours and lots of $$$$$$, sometimes lots of $$$$$ wasted on unnecessary gear.
So I'm looking and thinking to myself that $12,000 to $25000 is so bloody cheap, why would anybody starting out bother building their own from scratch.
Now I know I'm at least 12 months away from being fit enough to race a car but s%^t it's tempting to start trying to convince SWMBO that this could be a good time to seriously think about buying a back running 2f car.
I'm going out to QR on the 5/12 so I can meet the MX5 racers and then start (hopefully) to plan my entry into a new phase of my life.

Hi Terry
I know a few of the guys selling their cars are upgrading to NC's and I know Tony now has 3 race cars and is looking to sell his 2 2f cars and only own his turbo.
The state of the economy also has a small part to play in the number for sale.
I would seriously look to buy one now if you are looking as you said they cost a hell of allot more to build than what these guys are selling them for.
Look forward to seeing you at our corporate day.
Neil

Have a look at the green one on Carsales for $18K. That's Neil's old car and a steal at that price.

So Neil sold it and now it's for sale again?

Yeah Darren bought it, spent about $4K on it, raced it once and then bought an NC. It's back on the market for $2K less than he bought it off Neil for.

Don't say cheap. otherwise they might raise the price on you.

again, the prices are what the market dictates. It doesn't really matter how much you spend on the car you are building, if you are trying to sell it, it is only worth as much as the other party is willing to pay. That's how it works.

not too sure what you mean, because this is the internet after all.
in any case, it seems like OP is saying that the race cars are very cheap in his eyes. However, what i am trying to say that what seems cheap in your eyes might not be the same in others, and this might be why they are not selling.

It's worth that much just for the engine note!
