The thing that bothered me most was the firewall hole from the mania inspired intake.

I've not gotten to painting the rivets yet but this is what it looks like.

Painted and sealed in with silicone.




The last shot from a while ago shows the oval hole.



Should help reduce engine bay fumes through the vents

Hey shirtz, their were pics in the beginning of the thread but they broke due to the photobucket fiasco.

Here they are:


Purchased a cheap enclosed filter on ebay, an adapter for the AFM to new filter from supercheap and then cut the hole in the firewall.

I figured that the biggest pipe I could fit (100mm) would be better for performance.
Unfortunately no performance was gained but there was a very loud induction noise.

I actually believe that the stock filter was better and regret cutting the oval shaped hole.

If you are going to do it, keep the hole round, maybe 65/75mm.

Thank you! I'm looking forward to rebuilding the motor with forged rods and running more boost on a s15 ball bearing t28. Still need to mod and lift the exhaust a little but so far am quite happy with how things have turned out

Not really an update.
I've actually dríven Trixie the last two days in a row (that never happens!) and I've even taken her to a shopping centre, something I vowed I'd never do

The sudden loss of power is back. Happened once going uphill on full throttle.
Fuel gauge read just under half.

I then cruised and gave just mild squirts with no issues. Once closer to home I gave it full throttle again on a flat with no problems. Really not sure where the problem lies. Think I might replace the fuel pump and or wiring to it and see what that does if anything.

Today I pulled the cover off the fuel pump and checked the voltage. With a jumper in the diagnostic box on F/P and GND I'm getting 12.00v on the blue/red wire at the pump connector. The yellow wire was getting either 7.89 or 8.89v, I can't remember now. I think that's all fine?

Then I pulled the drivers seat and performed a stage 2 foamectomy on the seat base.
Previously I had only taken out the lower hump but today I went a bit further.

With the seat bolted in the car I do feel lower and can see more of the gauges. Was unable to go for a test drive as thunder started rolling in and I didnt want to dirty the car since I only washed her yesterday. I may still take a bit more out towards the front of the seat base but not game to go any further towards the back.

Will probably also do the seat back next time it's out and see if that helps any

Yes it is a pain but I love the car too much. The plan is to get as low as possible on stock rails in a na6 seat. If that works then I can invest in some nice nbab/c seats and do it again on the drivers seat.
I do have a Bear made fixed bracket that bolts to the floor and it will lower the seat a bit more but I'm uncertain if I would pass engineering with it.
I also have a sparco sprint V on stock rails that lowers me perfectly but I find it a pain to get in and out of and my lower back suffers on longer drives.
Everything is a compromise but it's a matter of finding what works best.

It's been a while since my last post.

Not a lot has happened with my 5 as I've been busy with.. well life and other projects.

My only tinker time resulted in a spare headlight cover and a bonnet being cut and vented. I'll add some pics when I can later.

And as it turns out, my last drive was the last time that the engine will be run in its current form.
Yep, I blew a headgasket only minutes from arriving home.

Oh well, she was only meant to be a short term runner until a built motor goes in.
Unfortunately I'm just not to be able to get to it for some time but rest assured this boosted 1.6 will come back harder and stronger then ever

The vents on the bonnet are mainly for looks and to vent heat. Plan is to weld sides as a frame and cut outs for crush zones.

The headlight cover now aids in getting cooler air to the filter. Amazing how out of alignment the cover was compared to my original. No pics but i have since adjusted the cover to fit nice pre welding.
